Last week, young Rivers was taken to his pediatrician for eczema and a red bump on his lip. The initial diagnosis was Hand Foot Mouth Disease (HFMD), and the family was advised to manage the symptoms at home.
However, within hours, Rivers’ condition worsened dramatically as spots began to spread rapidly. Despite their efforts to wait it out, by Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Rivers was inconsolable. Concerned, his parents took him to the ER, where their journey took a critical turn.
Dr. Richardson immediately recognized the severity of the situation, consulting with specialists at Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson. Rivers was transported by ambulance for further evaluation. After extensive testing and consultation with six doctors, the final diagnosis was revealed: Eczema Herpeticum, a rare and dangerous viral infection.
Currently, Rivers remains at Batson Children’s Hospital, undergoing treatment with IV antibiotics and antiviral medications. His condition requires close monitoring, as this virus can affect the brain, eyes, and vital organs, posing a life-threatening risk if not treated promptly.
This experience comes with an urgent message from Rivers’ family: Stop kissing babies that are not yours. Eczema Herpeticum can be transmitted through close contact, particularly through kissing, and its consequences can be devastating.
Please keep Rivers in your thoughts and prayers as he fights this illness. The family is hopeful for his full recovery, but the journey ahead remains challenging.
