Hilarious Freshmen Funk Band “Kick Brass” Steal the Stage at High School Talent Show

Who says the main attraction can’t be a saxophonist? Kick Brass, a high school band from Washington, is here to prove everyone wrong with this incredible, funk-infused performance at their school’s talent competition that went viral online! You’ve never seen anything like their exhilarating mix of 20th-century funk hits, which has since gone viral, we assure you.

Kick Brass is the epitome of talent, charisma, and pure fun—all of which we adore. With two saxophonists, a trumpet player, a tuba player, and a drummer, the five-piece freshman band confidently takes the stage. These students are serious, as seen by the lead saxophonist’s unabashed promotion of their forthcoming performances. The leader then begins the event with a cheeky warning: “We’re gonna take you all down to a place we like to call Funkytown.” What did nobody anticipate? The ensuing dancing eruption was just amazing!

The lead saxophonist’s feet take on a life of their own from the first note, swaying wildly as if he were the star of his own music video. With a faultless brass section, his colleagues keep things tight while producing a groovy sound so rich you’d think it was from the 1980s. Their performance of Lipps Inc.’s Funkytown is nothing short of legendary; the sax leads the way as every electronic component is turned into a daring, brassy masterpiece.

Kick Brass isn’t finished yet, though! They play a high-energy rendition of James Brown’s I Got You (I Feel Good) after taking the audience on a full-fledged funk journey. As the saxophonists swap solos and harmonize with astounding accuracy, the audience erupts, yelling and hooting. Meanwhile, everyone is in wonder when the trumpet player blares out some insanely high notes.

The stage is covered in roses by the end of their performance, and the other talent show competitors make their last bow. The decision? An incredible show that cemented Kick Brass’ status as up-and-coming talent!

The group, which included tenor saxophonist Oliver Abercrombie, sousaphonist Colton Gehring, baritone sax and trombone player Ethan Tang, trumpeter Jake Bailey, and drummer Mya Grymes, was just beginning its career. They took their act on the road after their performance at the talent contest went viral, garnering over a million views on YouTube! They wowed the crowd with fiery riffs and funk-driven beats at the 2023 Oak Harbor Music Festival and even contributed to the upbeat music of Orlando’s Southern Barbecue.
