“Spoon Lady” Joins Street Guitarist and Whips Up Soul-Stirring Porch Jam With Just Two Spoons

Just when you thought you had seen every possible musical mashup, Chris Rodrigues and The Spoon Lady appear, and their internet-raving porchside performance is blowing everyone away. With good reason, their rendition of Rodrigues’ own song, Angels in Heaven, has received over 60 million views.

Born on June 7, 1989, in Asheville, North Carolina, Chris Rodrigues had a difficult beginning in life because his father abandoned him when he was five years old. He took on odd occupations and eventually busked to support his mother. Before going out on the streets in 2012, Chris, a self-taught guitarist since he was a baby, experimented with everything from bluegrass to metal.

When Abby Roach, aka The Spoon Lady, got on the wrong train and ended up in Asheville a year later, fate intervened—literally. Abby was an activist for free speech and a street performer who had traveled the United States by freight train and busked to make ends meet. A musical match made in heaven resulted from the unanticipated detour.

While Chris has solo work, such as his 2016 album I’ll Keep My Light Lit, the two released a combined album titled Working on Wall Street in 2017. Abby is more than simply a musical wonder, though. A former radio host, she archives local artists with her project Busker Broadcast and promotes street art through the Asheville Buskers Collective.

But what has really enthralled people is their soul-shaking, stripped-down porch performance. No glitzy edits or studio trickery, just unadulterated talent. In the words of one viewer: “Music should be like this.” pure. Unadulterated talent

And truthfully? We couldn’t be more in agreement.
